Frequently Asked Questions
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis can be described as a focused state of attention and feels a little bit like daydreaming. It is a natural state that occurs in our mind and happens when our consciousness and intellect focus on one thing. During a hypnotic trance, the hypnotherapist can make positive suggestions to alter the client’s negative thoughts, feelings, patterns and behaviours on the subconscious level, creating positive and long-lasting change.
If I’m hypnotised, do I give control to the hypnotherapist?
The answer is no. As a client, you have full control over your mind and body during hypnosis and can stop it any time you wish. As it is a pleasant and relaxing experience, people very rarely choose to emerge from hypnosis.
What will happen during a hypnotherapy session?
During our first meeting, we will have an initial consultation where we will discuss why you seek therapy and what would you like to gain through hypnotherapy. I will then explain how the solution-focused hypnotherapy method works and how it can help you. Subsequent sessions will consist of two parts: talking therapy and hypnosis. I offer hypnotherapy in person in Plymouth as well as online.
Is hypnotherapy safe?
Yes, hypnotherapy is safe when conducted by a trained and qualified hypnotherapist. You are always in control during the session, and the hypnotherapist is there to guide and support you. It is a collaborative process.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions needed can vary depending on the individual and the issue being addressed. Some concerns may be resolved in just a few sessions, while others may require more. Usually, it’s between 4 and 16 sessions.
Is hypnotherapy the same as mind control?
No, hypnotherapy is not mind control. You are not under anyone's control during a session. Instead, it's a collaborative process where you work together with the hypnotherapist to achieve your goals.
What is Solution-Focused Hypnotherapy?
Solution-focused hypnotherapy is an approach that focuses on identifying and achieving solutions rather than dwelling on problems. It combines hypnosis with positive psychology to help individuals set achievable goals and work toward them with a positive mindset. It is a forward-looking, empowering form of therapy.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Yes, anyone can be hypnotised as it is a natural state for our brains. The depth and effectiveness of hypnosis may vary from person to person. It's essential to be willing and open to the process for it to work effectively.
What does it feel like to be in a hypnotic state?
Being in a hypnotic state often feels deeply relaxed and focused. It's similar to that feeling just before you drift off to sleep or when you're completely absorbed in a book or movie. You are aware of your surroundings, and you can hear and respond to the hypnotherapist's guidance.
